What is a Certificate of Deposit (CoD)?

A Certificate of Deposit (CoD) is an official digital certificate issued through the VAHAN Portal when a vehicle is handed over to a Government Authorized Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) for legal scrapping under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy.

The CoD serves as proof that the vehicle owner has deposited an End-of-Life Vehicle (ELV) with an authorized scrapping facility for scientific dismantling and environmentally responsible recycling. It is generated electronically and contains important information about the vehicle, the owner, and the registered scrapping facility.

Benefits of a Certificate of Deposit

A valid CoD may provide several advantages, depending on the applicable Central and State Government rules:

  • 100% Registration Fee Waiver: The standard government fee to register a new vehicle is completely waived.

  • Up to 25% Road Tax Rebate: State governments offer a major discount on the new car's road tax (up to 25% for private cars and up to 15% for commercial trucks).

  • 5% Manufacturer Discount: Most major car automakers give an additional discount on the showroom price of a new car if a valid COD is submitted.

Purpose of a Certificate of Deposit

The Certificate of Deposit has several important purposes:

  • Confirms that the vehicle has been legally submitted for scrapping.

  • Acts as proof of vehicle deposit at a Government Authorized RVSF.

  • Is generated digitally through the VAHAN Portal.

  • Supports a transparent and legally compliant vehicle scrapping process.

  • May be used to claim applicable benefits offered under the Vehicle Scrappage Policy, subject to Government rules.

Information Included in a CoD

A Certificate of Deposit typically includes:

  • Certificate Number

  • Vehicle Registration Number

  • Vehicle Make and Model

  • Owner's Name

  • Name of the Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF)

  • Date of Deposit

  • Certificate Issue Date

  • Digital Verification Details

Who Issues the Certificate?

The Certificate of Deposit is issued electronically by a Government Authorized Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF) through the VAHAN Portal after:

  1. The vehicle owner submits the required documents.

  2. The vehicle is verified by the RVSF.

  3. The vehicle is accepted for scrapping.

  4. The scrapping request is successfully processed in the VAHAN system.

Is a Certificate of Deposit Mandatory?

If you want to scrap your vehicle through a Government Authorized Registered Vehicle Scrapping Facility (RVSF), the Certificate of Deposit is an important part of the official process. It provides legal documentation of the vehicle's deposit and helps ensure that the scrapping is recorded in the VAHAN system.
